Overview
This day excursion is ideal for those who prefer a short few-hour vehicle journey followed by a half-day hiking experience in the mountains. The drive to Imlil takes approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes each way. The scenery is breathtaking, and there are guided walks and hikes available to accommodate various fitness levels.
-Starting the journey from Marrakech, you will initially ascend gently through cultivated lands, predominantly featuring olive trees and orchards. However, in the true Moroccan spirit, you’ll inevitably come across a shepherd attentively guiding his flock. Continuing past the administrative hub of Tahahnout, the road gradually becomes steeper, leading you through the market town of Asni, renowned for its bustling Saturday market. Beyond Asni, you take a left turn, passing by the lavish Kasbah Tamadot owned by Richard Branson, en route to Imlil through the picturesque Moulay Brahim gorge. This gorge is adorned with lush green walnut trees, which exhibit their exquisite blossoms in the month of March.
–
Imlil serves as the embarkation point for those aspiring to conquer Morocco’s loftiest peak, Mount Toubkal. Despite its role as a relatively bustling hub for trekkers, the town retains an authentically Moroccan ambiance that’s truly captivating.
Radiating from Imlil, a variety of hiking paths beckon. You have the option of a brief stroll (approximately 1.5 to 2 hours round trip) to Douar Samra or Aroumd, culminating in a satisfying lunch at a Berber guesthouse. Alternatively, you can embark on a more extended journey, veering away from settlements and traversing towards the Ouirgane Valley (3 to 4 hours). If preferred, mule rides are also on offer. While the landscape appears arid, it surprises with pockets of apple and walnut trees, complemented by the mesmerizing spectacle of snow-capped mountains during the winter months. Alternatively, you may opt for a concise walk or even forgo the hike entirely, indulging in a leisurely lunch at either Kasbah Tamadot or Kasbah du Toubkal.
-No matter your chosen pursuits throughout the day, as you contemplate your journey back to Marrakech, you will assuredly find yourself revitalized by the enchanting landscapes and the refreshing mountain breeze. Upon your return to Marrakech, a deeper comprehension of the stark contrasts between urban and rural lifestyles in Morocco will also have taken root within you.
